Architects and Designers

We work regularly with Architects, Property Designers and Design teams to ensure their building plans are compliant with Building Regulations/Standards. Using drawings and specifications we can undertake energy efficiency calculations to determine the energy profile of a property and can provide expert advice on how it can be improved to meet the requirements.

Energy Efficiency Compliance

With the introduction of stringent carbon emission targets and changes to Building Regulations/Standards, there is a much greater demand for Architects, Designers and Engineers to design new buildings that consume less energy (low carbon buildings). Although building design appears early within the building process, it has a big impact on the energy efficiency of the property once it is constructed.

Elmhurst Energy Consultancy specialises in the provision of energy calculations for building compliance and expert advice, to help bridge the gap between great design and great energy performance. The type of building determines the type of energy calculations required at design stage:

SAP Calculations (Residential/Dwellings)

Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) is a calculation methodology used to determine the energy performance of new build dwellings.

A Design Stage SAP Calculation is required for the Building Control/Warrant Application process. An application without a SAP report that passes, will not be given the go ahead to start construction.

Elmhurst Energy Services can provide these SAP calculations based on accurate and scaled drawings including any elevations, sections, floor plans and site plans. A predicted Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) can also be provided based on the design of the building.

The Calculation provides a Target Emission Rate (TER) and Target Fabric Energy Efficiency (TFEE) based on a notional dwelling which is the same shape and size. A Dwelling Emission Rate (DER) and Dwelling Fabric Energy Efficiency (DFEE) is also calculated to demonstrate that the designed property does not exceed the target rates.

SBEM Calculations (Commercial/Non-Dwellings)

sbemcalculationsSimplified Building Energy Modelling (SBEM) is a calculation methodology used to determine the energy performance of new buildings (non-dwellings).

A Design Stage SBEM Calculation is required for the Building Control/Warrant Application process. An application without an SBEM Calculation will not be given the go ahead to begin construction.

Elmhurst Energy Services can provide these SBEM Calculations based on accurate and scaled drawings including any elevations, sections, floor plans and site plans.

The SBEM Calculation also establishes the Target Emission Rate (TER) and sets the standard for the proposed CO2 emission rate i.e. the minimum allowable standard for the energy performance of that building.

Extensions and Conversion/Renovation Projects

Some extension and conversion projects may require energy calculations in order to comply with Building Regulations/Standards. This is dependent on various factors including the size, amount of glazing or change to energy status that occurs.
