What is ESOS?

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for larger organisations in the UK. In order to meet the qualifying criteria for ESOS these organisations must:

employ over 250 employees

have an annual turnover in excess of €50 million, AND have an annual balance sheet total in excess of €43 million

Qualifying organisations must undertake an energy audit every four years which will measure the energy use from its industrial processes, buildings and transport. The audit will also help identify cost and energy saving measures.

Elmhurst Energy Services can provide these audits to help you comply with ESOS.

  2. increasing profit margins
  3. improving your carbon footprint

We follow a three stage process to ensure that you comply with ESOS:

  • Establish all participants
  • Outline data required for total energy consumption
  • Agree ESOS compliance route (ESOS Audit, ISO 50001 etc)

2. Measure

  • Appoint Lead Assessor
  • Conduct energy audit
  • Produce recommendations and cost saving opportunities

3. Report

  • Present ESOS report to organisations for sign off by Directors.
  • Send notification of compliance to Environment Agency (scheme administrators)
  • Provide ESOS evidence pack

How much could I save as a result of having undertaken an ESOS Audit?

The government estimates that a typical ESOS audit is likely to cost between £5,000 & £50,000 depending on the size and complexity of your business. In real terms, the cost will always be a small proportion of your annual energy expenditure. Although the cost/benefit per ESOS participated is expected to vary significantly, the average bill saving per enterprise is estimated at around £35,400 from the initial audit, with net savings for businesses across the UK in the region of £1.6bn.
